I have always loved to read, and at any given time I usually have two to three novels going at once.  Since 2021, one of them is always a Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction.

In April 2021, I set out to read every fiction Pulitzer Prize –winning novel. I started this as a way to break out of my own reading habits. I tended to choose books that were very similar—typically centered on white women and events from the past 75 years. I wanted to broaden my perspective and read stories I might not otherwise pick up.

When I began, I had already read a handful from the list. At first, I made it more interesting by asking my son or my husband to choose the next book for me. The first one my son selected was So Big by Edna Ferber.  He chose it based on the cover art and it turned out to be a story about a mother and son.  My husband, a former service member, chose The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk.

Over the past few years, I have shifted to working through the list by decade. Five years in, I have completed 67 of the 99 winners—knowing, of course, that on May 4 there will be a new addition.  Hopefully I have already read it :)
